Throwback Thursday: MTV's The 70s House!

Since it is Thursday and I was slacking last week, so therefore robbed you of an amazing Throwback Thursday post, I am coming to you now with what could be the very BEST Throwback Thursday post EVER.  Okay, well, that might be pushing things a little.  I’m actually going to reminisce on a very, odd reality television show that lasted for one season on MTV.  This show was called MTV’s The 70s House.  Man, this show was weird.  You almost have to wonder what/who inspired this.  This show ran during the summer of 2005 and there are pretty much zero traces of it anywhere on Youtube, or anywhere online for that matter.  I watched this show the whole way through and remember the main idea of the whole thing, but if I had to tell you any details, I’d fail miserably, so this post is sponsored by Wikipedia and Google, amongst various other websites.

For those that are 70s challenged,
here is a picture of a dial rotary phone!
Like many other reality TV shows, this one took twelve contestants and stuck them in a house together, kinda like on Big Brother.  But no, this was different from Big Brother!  This was very different.  This house was 70’s themed and forced these people to live as though they were actually IN the 70’s.  They weren’t allowed to use cell phones or many other technologies, they were forced to dress in 70s attire, and they even had to speak in phrases that were used in the 70s!  If I remember correctly, they strongly enforced all of these rules with no allowance in mess-ups.  If the people wanted to call home, they had to use one of those dial rotary phones, you know the ones.  (Fun fact:  I’ve always wished that dial rotary phones were still "cool", as I think it would be so fun to use them on a daily basis.  Pushing the button’s on my iPhone’s touchscreen is so passé.)  Each episode one or two people would be cut as they tried to find which contestant was “the most 70s.”  And let me tell you, these people SERIOUSLY WANTED to win.  I’m talking extreme dedication.  What does this title bring you, besides the fact that I’m sure the winner received money, you ask?  I DO NOT KNOW!!  That is what is so great about this show!  Man, I wish there were episodes of this somewhere online.

The cast of "MTV's The 70s House"
Throughout the entire course of the show, at random times, a “Hustle alarm” was played and all the remaining contestants would have to stop what they were doing (even at times, sleeping) to get up and do the Hustle. If you are 70s challenged, I have included the link to a Youtube video of what the Hustle looks and sounds like.  There were a couple people that played the role of hosts, but for the majority, communication to the contestants was done through a voice called Oscar.  I vividly remember the sound of Oscar’s voice to this day..

Oh!  I’m kidding about money being the prize.  Wikipedia lists the prize of this show as “a prize package from HP, a 2005 Voltswagen Beetle, and a trip to Europe.   Which is good I guess, but I still think these people who did the show are absolute crazies.   I don’t even need to give recaps on where these people are today.  None of them went on to do anything, and for all I know they are now living in the 80s!   But to tell you the truth, that’s not a bad life choice per se, as the 80s were filled with fabulous movies and music!

Challenges on this show included dodgeball, rollerskating, and Operation, so you can only imagine how truly exciting this show was!  But dropping the sarcasm, I truly do think I liked this show.  Granted that I was approximately thirteen years old.  I do remember the rest of my family thinking I was insane for liking it, but what can I say, I’m a huge sucker for bad reality shows.  If you remember this show, please please leave a comment or some form of feedback, because as of now, I feel very alone in the fact that I watched this trainwreck.

Alright, that's about it for this TBT.  I hope you found it GROOVY, BABY!

  1. I remember this show as well and have been looking for it everywhere. I think I was drawn to it because of how dumb it was. It mocked other reality shows basically. If I remember right, the last challenge was the ice breaker game. And the look on the peoples faces when they had to play dodge ball against WWE players and do a dance off against modern dancers.

Someone needs to release this on DVD because I would pay just to see it again.

    1. Oh, and thank you for commenting on this! I sometimes feel as though I'm the only one who remembers this show and/or loved it!

  2. Before I wrote this article, I was looking for it so I could rewatch it first, but it's like there are no traces of the show left! (Well, some, but nothing of value) I think you're right about the ice breaker game! Something about MTV Reality Shows like this and the Assistant is that they're kind of a joke, but for people like me, that just makes me love them more! I have hopes that someday it'll be put on DVD or someone out there recorded the show and will someday upload it to Youtube!

  3. What was unique about THIS reality show was that the contestants were all CHILDREN as in teenagers. Imagine a teenager addicted to their cell phones, Ipads, slang language, and style being stripped to basics and voted out for using language not of the 70's lol. They were rewarded during the show for good behavior with things like a fondue party, etc.
I too was in deep search for episodes anywhere online to share with my own children. To no avail sadly, the internet has been scrubbed clean. Several of the contestants did in fact go on to bigger and better things according to IMDB records.
Still imaging those kids in wonderment at an 8-track and how to survive without a microwave.... laughs

    1. I agree, it was a very unique show. I don't think we'll ever see anything like it again. I want someone to come out of the woodwork with the episodes. I'd love to rewatch them since I have little recollection of the whole thing!

  4. I loved this show. I was 14 at the time and watched every episode, but for some reason I never watched the ending. Now 9 years later I remember about it and watched the complete 10 episodes on YouTube! Very happy I was able to watch the ending, but I wish like today's shows they would do interviews to the cast about what we all saw, like the after shows. I thought this show was unique and really funny, although the prizes weren't all that great, then again it is 2014. I hope they do the 80 or 90 house to the younger generations who are more attached to everything that is social media! Amway's best show of my teen years.

    1. Thank you so much for pointing it out to me that someone had added them to Youtube! I can't wait to watch it again. The 90s house would be so awesome. I would LOVE that! I think it would do even better than the 70s house, honestly.
