Hannah recaps episode #6 of 'King of the Nerds!'

After watching the show last night, I’m really exciting about writing up this recap.  This show never fails and every episode is amazing.  The show started off with a recap of last week’s episode and then showed a few clips of the nerds the night before receiving the challenge for this episode.  We get to see how much Virgil loves dancing.  He plays some Dance Central 3 to relax, and he tells us “I dance naked in front of the mirror, but I think most people do that.”  TMI, Virgil, TMI.  Also, do most people really do that?  Anyway, I’m getting off topic.

Fast forward and the nerds exit the house to be told what this week’s challenge is.   The hosts are dressed up in weird costumes and the one looks like he is attempting his best Lady Gaga.  Virgil described the situation perfectly:
“My first thought was that we were going to make a meth lab” –Virgil
Then, we find out that for this week’s challenge, the two teams will compete in a dancing and singing contest.  They will be writing nerdy songs and learning choreography before performing in front of an audience and three guest judges.  The songs will be “nerd anthems, that every nerd will want to have as their ringtone.”  Genevieve is pretty excited about this challenge because, as seen in about every episode up until now, we have been shown how much she LOVES singing.  And from the first part of this episode, we can assume that Virgil is excited to show off his dance moves.  (Note:  Virgil’s dancing is very.. nerdy.  I don’t know how to describe it without making fun of it, so I will just leave it at that.  Just to give a quick mental image for anyone who may not have watched.)

The teams start working on their songs, and we find out that Virgil cannot sing.   Genevieve called him tone deaf.  Ivan is going “Snoop Dog” on the Servants of the Forsaken Orb’s song.  Danielle, though, is trying to take over this challenge for the SFO because she has made nerdy song parodies online before.  Her team, which now consists of Ivan and Moogega, are off-put by Danielle’s behavior.

Then, it’s time for the teams to start working on their choreography.  They are given choreographers NAPPYTABS (!) famous for their choreography on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance.  (Side note: I love NappyTabs!  And you can tell this season was filmed a while ago, because Tabitha was still pregnant at the time, so this was before or around the last season of SYTYCD in the summer.)  The orange team seems to be doing better with learning the dance moves, but Danielle is acting like it’s going terrible.  (I thought her dancing looked fine, but I guess she didn’t.)
“If we lose this nerd war over that fact that Danielle can’t do a body roll..” –Ivan, on Danielle not learning how to do a body roll, one of the dance moves for their performance.
*Insert another Little Caesars advertisement here*
“I’m trying to tell my body to do a roll, but there are no rolls to be had.” –Danielle
Now, it’s almost time for the nerd war of the week and the teams are dressing up in their costumes.  Team Blextrophy has chosen to go with the “nerdy schoolgirl/schoolboy” look, while Team Servants of the Forsaken Orb choose to dress more hip-hop/rap.  It’s time to battle!

First up is Blextrophy with their song, “Talk Nerdy to Me”:

Memorable lyrics:
“I don’t care if it’s Klingon or Na’vi, talk nerdy to me, talk nerdy to me.”
“Growing up as a skinny academic, other kids treated me.. like an epidemic.”
Overall feeling about Blextrophy’s performance:  I liked it, but it was a lot of repetition from what was shown.  I will say that it was a catchy song and tune.  Their dancing was also pretty good.  Servants of the Forsaken Orb were impressed with the performance and the judges were surprised that they pulled off what they did so well for only having a day to put it all together.

Next, the Servants of the Forsaken Orb present their song, “Nerds are King”:

Memorable lyrics:“You call me a nerd like it’s a bad thing.  The world is a kingdom and nerds are king.”
“Nerd’s the new cool and we run this town.”
“I’m the Pokemaster, I have to catch them all.”
Overall feeling about Servants of the Forsaken Orb’s performance:  I LOVED this one!  This was, by far, my favorite of the two performances.  The lyrics were more relatable and covered a wider range of nerdy topics.  They did great with the challenge, and the judges were also impressed.  I would definitely have this song as my ringtone! (Note: Probably won’t though because I like the generic ones!)
“Is there a nerdy Care Bear?  Calculator Bear?  Math Bear?” –Danielle, on Blextrophy’s song sounding like something that would be used for a Care Bears introduction
Servants of the Forsaken Orb
The judges then decide, on a 2-1 vote, that the winners of the challenge are: TEAM SERVANTS OF THE FORSAKEN ORB!  As the winners of the nerd war, they will get to go play on one of the largest trampolines!  I am always so jealous of these rewards!!

Blextrophy is upset over their loss, but Virgil seems to be taking it the hardest.  He almost seems tired of the whole competition and even goes as far as saying, “I would almost rather leave and go back to CalTech to finish my research.”  He then decides that maybe he should just take a nap so that he’ll feel better.

After playing on the trampolines, SFO talk about who they should send into the Nerd Off.  Danielle thinks that maybe they should send Virgil in because he is a fountain of knowledge.
Danielle, on being excited to go on the trampolines.
“Virgil told me that sewer rats can get their tails tied together, and that then they are forced to live their entire lives as Siamese sewer rats.” –Danielle
Back at Nerdvana, Celeste is trying to fly under the radar in order to stay out of the nerd off.  She doesn’t think that SFO would put her into the nerd off, but her team also doesn’t seem to want to send her into the nerd off.  It seems like Blextrophy will vote Virgil  into the nerd off because Genevieve thinks that she would be able to work better with Celeste, and it seems like Celeste feels the same.

It’s then time to find out who will be competing in the Nerd Off.  Blextrophy voted Virgil into the nerd off, and Servants of the Forsaken Orb voted Genevieve into the nerd off unanimously.  SO happy that Celeste is safe!  She is one of my personal favorites left in the competition.  (Side note: I like different things about each of them though.  I think that I’d only be unhappy with the end if Genevieve won, because she annoys me greatly most of the time.)

The nerd off will test their dancing skills.  They will be tested of their “funky moves” in a game of Dance Central 3 for Kinect!  This nerd off seemed geared towards Virgil’s strengths, but as seen in previous episodes (like Alana, with a comic book nerd off challenge), people can fail at the things that they are best at.  Virgil is excited about this challenge and he’s even giggling about it!  Genevieve calls this nerd off her “biggest nightmare.”  She then boohoos about it for the longest time because it’s the “dumbest thing to go home over.”  She says she is terrible at dancing and Virgil always scores higher than her when they have played together in the past.

First up is Genevieve.  Her dancing is very awkward, but she seems to be doing a good job of getting the points.  Her practice is paying off, much like it did the last time she had to compete in a nerd off.  She passes 1,000,000 points and did a good job overall.  She set the bar high for Virgil and scored higher than she had ever scored before.  Virgil thinks he’d almost have to play a flawless game to win the nerd off against her.

Virgil and Genevieve must both compete in the Nerd Off.
It is then Virgil’s turn.  He is having a lot more fun with the nerd off than Genevieve did.  Celeste classifies Virgil’s dancing as “middle-aged white man!”  Virgil, though, classifies his dancing as “Latin” dancing.  A lot of his dance moves are being scored as “flawless” and he is getting a lot of combos.  He too passes 1,000,000 points.  He wanted a flawless finish, but didn’t get it, so is a little worried about how that will affect his score.

Virgil finishes in 6th place!
The difference between the two scores is less than 30,000 points which is about 2% of the overall score.  Genevieve is announced as the winner of the nerd off!  I am so upset!  Virgil thinks that his non-flawless finish was the reason that he didn’t win.  I will miss Virgil.  I know that I didn’t like him at the start of the season, and I really didn’t even like him until recent episodes, but this episode has gave me a great appreciation for him.  Everyone remaining on the cast seems bittersweet over Virgil leaving the competition.

So now it’s down to 5:  Ivan, Moogega, Danielle, Celeste, and Genevieve.  The teams will now be gone and it will be an individual game.   The team flags are dropped and we’re now in the final stretch of the game.

Virgil’s parting words are about how he wants the world to be a nicer place with nicer people.  I forget exactly how he worded it, but it was very sweet!  He will be missed, but it will be cool to see how the rest of the season plays out!

New episodes of 'King of the Nerds' air at 10pm on Thursdays on TBS!
